Who taught you to cook?

Who taught you to cook?  Was it your mother, grandmother or father?

I started baking from the time that I was very young.  I had to take over the full cooking duties when I was quite young.  I’m thinking I was 10 or 11.  My mother worked nights, so I fixed dinner for my Dad and brother.  My mother had the recipes written out and I would just follow them.  I didn’t always do a good job.  I remember one time that I fixed chicken and I didn’t bake it long enough.  It was still red on the inside.  Not a good thing.  I didn’t understand at that time how bad it was to serve uncooked chicken, but my brother made a big deal out of it.

Even though I did all the cooking, it wasn’t until after I was married that I realized that I really didn’t know how to fix many things.  I didn’t even know how to hard boil an egg until a few years ago.  I would always have to get the recipe book out just to boil an egg.  I know, that’s pretty bad.  I have it memorized now.  LOL  My vet told me one time to boil chicken for my dog because she was sick and I had to ask him how to do that.  LOL  I had never made grilled cheese until last month.  I just learned to make gravy on Christmas Day.   It seems like I learned how to make meals, but not the basic things.

I’ve learned a lot from watching cooking shows on TV.  I used to watch one called How To Boil Water.  I liked that show because it was very basic.  I’ve also learned by just experimenting.

So, who taught me to cook?  I guess my Mom, recipe books, TV and several home economic classes.
